Proefdiervrij launches sixth Venture Challenge
Proefdiervrij invites researchers to apply for the sixth edition of the Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge (January – April 2026). The programme helps scientific breakthroughs in the life sciences evolve into successful ventures that actively contribute to a world without animal testing.
From research to real-world impact
Through the Venture Challenge, Proefdiervrij connects science with entrepreneurship. Over a three-month period, participating teams develop a solid business case, take part in two intensive bootcamps, and receive expert coaching from experienced entrepreneurs and investors. This approach enables animal-free models to reach the market faster and create tangible impact.
“With the Venture Challenge, animal-free models can move from development to application,” says Anne Burgers, Science & Innovation Advisor at Proefdiervrij. “It’s a vital step toward accelerating science without animal testing.”
The Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge aims to turn scientific breakthroughs in animal-free research into commercial enterprises. Over the course of several months, researchers receive guidance in developing a venture plan. The winner receives a cash prize of €25,000 to further develop and bring their animal-free innovation to market.
Who can apply?
Research teams (3 – 5 members) with a life-science innovation that is entirely animal-free (meaning no use of animals covered by the Dutch Animal Experiments Act) are eligible. The innovation must demonstrate clear potential to reduce or replace animal testing in the short or long term.
